Malaysia Election: Grandma Maimum Loses Deposit But Prevents Mat Sabu From Winning

Posted on March 9th, 2008 in Politics | 4 Comments »

maimum.jpgSpunky grandmother Maimun Yusof, 89, who contested as an Independent candidate in Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat lost her deposit in the election after obtaining 685 votes out of 65,112 votes cast in the area in today’s election.

But this blog would give an “A” for her effort. She secured enough votes to deny Mat Sabu the victory in the area.

Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Razali Ismail who polled 32,562 votes won the seat with a 628-vote majority, beating Maimun and Mat Sabu who garnered 31,934 votes.

In Sabah, an Independent candidate in Senallang state seat, Mohd Sayadi Bakal, failed to obtain a single vote and is probably the only candidate who obtained zero-vote in this election.

In order not to lose a deposit, a candidate must obtain 1/8 of the total votes cast.

Malaysia Election: Pairin Prevails Against Brother Jeffrey In Keningau

Politics is thicker than blood in Sabah but forgive me for being parochial. At a time when a political tsunami seems to be hitting the north and middle part of the peninsular, all I could manage was a blog entry about a rather “insignificant” election result in the interior of my homestate.

But first thing first, the result: Parti Bersatu Sabah president Datuk Joseph Pairin Kitingan has won the Keningau parliamentary seat, beating younger brother and Parti Keadilan Rakyat vice-president Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan by a 4,264-vote majority.

Pairin polled 14,598 against Jeffrey’s 10,334. Jeffrey also lost in Bingkor state seat.

What can I say; I was down with a rather severe bout of flu that knocked me out during the best part of the night when the 12th general election results were being announced.

I woke up at 12.30am after sleeping my fever away for nearly four hours and little did I realise how the world has changed — and has remained — while I was laying there at the sofa, dreaming about things other than tonight’s election results.

Obama Accused Of Plagiarism; Back In M’sia Tok Guru Does The Unplagiariable

ObamaBarack Obama, the man I want to see holding office in the White House, has been accused of plagiarism by Hillary Clinton’s camp after he uses as example certain phrases uttered by Governor Deval Patrick of Massachusetts sometime in 2006.

Obama is said to be stressing a point in an apparent defence against Clinton’s suggestions that he was merely a man of words rather than a man of deeds. A talker, not a doer, according to Clinton’s campaigners.

Blogger Jeff Ooi To Contest In Malaysian Election

Posted on February 16th, 2008 in Politics | No Comments »

i-WitnessJeff Ooi, the guy who run the popular Screenshots blog and arguably the man who pioneered socio-political blogging in Malaysia, is set to contest in the March 8 Malaysian general election as an opposition candidate.

Nomination day is on Feb 24, and by then we will know where he is contesting and against who.

Words have it that he is contesting in Penang. According to him, he will also be releasing his book titled “i-Witness” on nomination day.

His participation in the election is unique because one can look at it from many perspectives — from the straight-forward opposition versus government point of view, or even deeper than that.

More on this later… as I’ve just woken up from an afternoon nap — had a long day these past few days — my brain is still in its sleepy state and hasn’t fully warmed up to complicated thoughts yet.

Still, as I said on Wednesday, can blogs and bloggers make a different in this election?

You can read Jeff’s take on his candidacy, here. By the way, this is not a sponsord post.

So the Malaysian parliament was dissolved yesterday to pave the way for the general election, a once-in-a-five-year magical moment for Malaysia and Malaysians.

Reuters reported it this way: “Malaysia’s premier called on Wednesday for fresh elections that he is certain to win, kicking off a campaign likely to be overshadowed by racial issues and religious tension in the southeast Asian nation.”

“What, Where, When… Can It Be?” - How Blogs Influence Malaysian Politics

Posted on February 13th, 2008 in Politics, blog | No Comments »

In the next few weeks to come and until after the soon-to-be-announced Malaysian general election, Jaxon’s Review will attempt to discuss the role — or shall I make that the influence — of the Internet, in particular blogs, to the Malaysian politics.

Bloggers have been discussing Malaysian politics and the coming general election at a rate never before seen in a country whose citizens are increasingly Internet-enabled.

Are blogs influential in moving and swinging votes? Are they not? Are bloggers merely digital narcissists as some would like to label them.

But would it be the same if there were no bloggers in Malaysia?
