A New Year, A New Toy — Canon PowerShot SX1 IS

I bought myself a new toy at the end of last year — a 10 megapixel Canon PowerShot SX1 IS, which has 20x optical zoom (28mm-560mm equivalent) capability.

All-in-all it cost me RM2,500, which is RM2,199 for the camera, RM130 for a 16GB memory card and another RM130 for rechargeable batteries and the charger.

You may ask why do I need to spend the extra money to buy the 16GB memory card when a 4GB card — which is normally given free by camera dealers nowadays — should suffice for a 10 megapixel camera. Even an 8GB card will be enough, you may say.

The answer my friend, lies in the camera’s high definition (HD) video capability.

HD video takes a lot of digital space that you can only record about 12 minutes of HD video with a 4GB card.

I have had frustrating experiences of having to delete images or to shoot in low resolutions in the past just so that I could squeeze in additional shots into my previous camera’s 256MB memory card.

Now with the power of 16GB, I can shoot tonnes of still photos at their highest resolution and shoot HD or ordinary video without having to worry about digital storage. Furthermore, the price difference between a 8GB and a 16GB card is not that much.

Apart from the 20x ultrazoom and the HD video, other features of the SX1 IS are: 4fps continuous shot, zero-cm macro capability, face detection, CMOS sensor which is a first for Canon’s non-DSLR camera, wide-angle lens, wide screen mode, multiple colour parameters, tilt and swivel LCD screen and so on.

You can read the Canon PowerShot SX1 IS review here.

Thanks bro for the visit. Actually D90 is better but expensive. Anyway, if cash is not a problem, here are some suggestions if u decide to buy the D90:

1. beli body only
2. beli lens Tamron 18-270mm
3. beli 2x teleconverter.
(this way you can have a very wide-angle and super zoom capability)

D90 also has a very good video capability. Hope this helps.

Cheers!

You should use SDHC Class 6 30MB/s for faster processing. I’m using it with this camera. 16GB SDHC Class 6 cost you RM420.00
